Frank and Don Fraser (Lotus Ruckle’s brothers) at the Menhinick cider house in 1945. Cory Menhinick came to Salt Spring Island in 1920 purchasing a large parcel of land near the Beaver Point Hall, comprising what is not Wave Hill Farm. Lots of farmers made cider on Salt Spring, but none made it as clear and sparkling as Cory did. His favourite apples, the Gravensteins were fermented with barley sugar to create a cider that has been called, “the best champagne.’ Cider sold for 75cents a gallon and that was the main farm income in the1920’s, helping to put food on the table.
In the 1930’s, cider parties were popular on Salt Spring. Lotus Ruckle spent here teenage years on the farm, as Cory was her step father.
