Additional Information on Henry Ruckle

Henry Ruckle arrived on Salt Spring in 1872, and immediately started acquiring land at the south east corner of Salt Spring Island.  By the time of his death, he had established Ruckle Farm as one of the strong farms with 996 acres of land, which included the 200 acres of the working farm.  This land was passed on to son, Daniel Henry Ruckle, who in turn passed it on to son Gordon Ruckle.  In 1972, approximately 100 years after Henry Ruckle arrived, Gordon and wife Lotus, sold the 1196 acres of Ruckle Farm to the Province of BC for the creation of Ruckle Park, one of the GEMS OF THE GULF ISLAND – and as Gordon and Lotus had wanted – A Park For the People.

Dedications

Every year, we tend to dedicate the festival to someone.

2010 was Rosemarie Roemer.

1)  So here is the Dedication on the program.

We dedicate this Apple Festival to

Rosemarie Roemer,

Apple Fest. Volunteer
December 8, 1941– September 1, 2009
We lost a beautiful Salt Springer.

Rosemarie embraced life with a positive and caring attitude. Her vitality, wisdom, humour and smile will be forever missed.  These attributes and countless others brought her many friends and relationships that she cherished greatly. Rosemarie valued the importance of giving back to the community.

Her Saskatchewan roots shone through in her warm smile, that always welcomed newcomers.  She became a member of the Salt Spring community basically by showing up.  She stepped forward to introduce herself and thus made many new friends.  She then went on to nurture her new friendships with small acts of kindness.    Thus she could be counted on for a lively and heartfelt conversation.

We miss her her strong hand,  gentle heart and warm smile.

Rosemaire, frequently on Peter’s arm,  became a member of the Salt Spring community basically by showing up.  She attended music and theatre events.  She stepped forward to introduce herself and thus make many new friends.  She then went on to nurture her new friendships with small acts of kindness.  She shared her opinions and said who she was.  Thus she could be counted on for a lively and heartfelt conversation.

Rosemarie’s time with us was short but we hold the gentle memory of a good soul.  We miss her her strong hand and gentle heart.
